How Fast Is Your Vision Changing?

Updated: Nov 14

Have you ever been driving on the highway and a car “peels out” from behind you to pass you without making a sound? Chances are the culprit was a Tesla. After a recent conversation with a proud Tesla owner-turned-brand evangelist, I understood why.

The speed and stealth at which a Tesla changes lanes is influenced by two major factors. The first is the electric motor which is quieter and less cumbersome than a traditional one. The second is a setting drivers use to avoid slow-moving vehicles. When this option is selected, this top-selling electric car pulls around obstacles—it avoids threats to its ideal path and velocity.

Digging a little deeper, I found out Tesla Vision uses multiple cameras to simulate a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Traditional vehicles still rely on the operator to gather all information about traffic patterns, speed, surrounding vehicles, and more before they can change lanes. While a Tesla uses the power of a team – albeit of cameras – to guide the operator and vehicle around the slower vehicle.

The same is true for the forward movement of an organization’s vision. A lone visionary or solitary stakeholder can't stay up to date on every detail within a business' environment and internal operations.

Principle 1

The speed of change calls for a multidirectional approach to leadership.

Traditional visionary leadership moves in one direction: downward. The top-down approach presents major hurdles for 21st-century organizations. Leaders face the task of re-envisioning their organizations in an external environment marked by compounded volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity compared to a decade ago. Middle managers face the task of perpetually re-engaging their team members in the same work they have hired them to do. Everyone is looking for sustainable and automatable solutions. Thinking about the future is a team sport.

The Vision360 Model reconceptualizes vision-related leadership for the 21st-century organization and the present-day leader. This book aims to help leaders, organizations, and teams figure out where they are and where they are headed within the scope of vision development and realization.
